The final part of the Know Your Enemy 2022 series. The Michigan State Spartans are coming off a surprising 11-2 season, where they shocked the entire country. Most of that was due to electric play from RB Kenneth Walker. Will they be able to repeat those results without him?
The answer mostly lies on the shoulders of RB Jarek Broussard (transfer from Colorado) and RB Jalen Berger (transfer from Wisconsin). If either back can step up, the Michigan State offense does have serious potential. QB Payton Thorne is back after throwing a single-season school record for touchdown passes. On the outside WR Jayden Reed is back, who is also a phenomenal punt returner. Their offensive line is a little shaky and perhaps not as strong as last year’s, but has experience at all five spots.
The 2021 defense was the worst pass defense in the country and that’s not a hyperbole. How does that improve in 2022? CB Ameer Speed (transfer from Georgia) is suppose to aid in that secondary’s recovery. Michigan State also loses a pair of impressive defensive ends. A lot will be on the shoulders of LB Cal Haladay, who had 96 tackles last season.
