Clemson fan reacts to Notre Dame game
Dabo Swinney and the No. 4 Clemson Tigers will not make the College Football Playoff this year. The Tigers traveled to South Bend to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and got cleaned up 35-14 in an overwhelming win for the Fighting Irish. Clemson falls to 8-1 and will likely drop outside of the top ten in the next College Football Playoff rankings.

Notre Dame dominated Clemson in the trenches all night, running for 263 yards. Their vaunted defensive line got stonewalled for most of the game and broken tackles were a huge problem for the defense. The Fighting Irish scored 35 points by only throwing for 85 yards! Their defensive line also gave the Tigers trouble throughout the game.

DJ Uiagalelei had another bad game. At this point, I’m convinced he’ll have to return to college for his senior year because his draft stock is crashing. All of the good will he earned over the first half of the season is gone. But, I thought it was an arrogant and incorrect decision by coach Swinney to try and bench Uiagalelei for freshman Cade Klubnik early in the second half when he and offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter did NOTHING to help DJ succeed early in the game. Uiagalelei made plenty of mistakes, but Clemson’s uncreative offense and horrendous playcalling only magnified issues.

I’m sorry, but if you think Cade Klubnik gives Clemson a better chance to win on the road against Notre Dame than DJ Uiagalelei, you haven’t watched the freshman play since the opener against Georgia Tech. He should not have been in this game!

Cade has no pocket awareness, his footwork and ball placement are clumsy, and his eye discipline is non-existent. He panics and throws wobbly passes when pressured and doesn’t set a consistent base. DJ has some issues in those areas but is far more technically developed.

DJ is more decisive with the ball and is able to complete routine throws to the sideline and in the MOF while Cade freezes up before arriving late and throwing from an uneven base instead of throwing with timing. Cade will get there in a year to two, but he’s not there now.

There were two nice touchdown drives by DJ Uiagalelei late in this game against Notre Dame. Where was this playcalling and QB play for the first three quarters? Notre Dame’s backups were coming in the game but DJ was much snappier with his decision making and the offense ran more slants and comeback/curl routes that naturally create separation to help the quarterback. And they finally started playing with tempo. I don’t understand a single thing this team does on offense.
