Michigan State opted to have an open spring practice instead of a traditional spring game, just like they did in 2022. Unlike 2022, however, the Spartans played solid football this past Saturday, with the quarterback, running back, offensive line, and defensive back being the highlights. Previously 3rd string quarterback Noah Kim had the best performance, as he had good poise in the pocket and accurately placed the ball to make several impressive plays. In the trenches, the Spartans were evenly matched on both sides of the ball, with the offensive line even pushing the defense back at times to open up the run. While I think Jay Johnson and Scottie Hazelton should both be unemployed right now, I think Mel Tucker might have been wise to keep Michigan State’s identity centered around the run, as runningback Nathan Carter looks fast and strong behind a growing offensive line. On defense, while the line wasn’t as impressive as I anticipated, linebacker Benjamin Hall stood out and the secondary was able to defend the pass with some proficiency.
