The SEC decided to stick with eight games instead of moving to nine games. This means that for the 2024 season, they will continue with eight conference games. They haven’t set a fixed opponent yet, but they will schedule the best games for the first year Texas and Oklahoma join the conference. If we look at what Brett McMurphy tweeted out, an ESPN source told the Action Network that they were not surprised by the SEC’s decision to remain at eight league games in 2024. Only Florida, Georgia, LSU, Missouri, and Texas A&M supported a nine-game SEC schedule. Oklahoma and Texas, although they wanted nine SEC games, did not have a vote. Alabama wasn’t happy with Auburn, LSU, and Tennessee being their fixed opponents. There’s a tweet underneath that says it’s about money, and when ESPN agrees to pay more, there will be nine games.
Now, South Carolina and Kentucky aren’t included because they already play Louisville and Clemson at the end of the season, essentially giving them nine conference games. Those games aren’t going anywhere. Vanderbilt isn’t included because they want more non-conference games to increase their chances of winning. Clark Lee is trying to change the scheduling dynamic in Nashville. There are various reasons behind this decision. Some schools, including Georgia, have big non-conference games coming up. For example, Alabama has Wisconsin and another Power Five opponent scheduled in the next few years. So, there are different factors influencing the decision, not just ESPN’s money. It’s also about the funds needed to buy out contracts. I’m not surprised they stuck with an eight-game conference schedule, and I don’t expect it to change unless they find a way to incentivize it. Currently, there’s no incentive other than it being good for the fans. However, it can cause imbalances with home and away games, and buying out contracts will lead to financial loss, despite the new TV deal. It’s an interesting situation, and I don’t think it will change after 2024. Kirby Smart shared his perspective, saying he doesn’t care much because they will eventually play all the teams in the conference twice every four years anyway. He believes the 7-1 split works well, keeping things fresh with new matchups every other year, making games like Alabama vs. Tennessee or Auburn vs Georgia more enjoyable when they finally occur.
