Why Evan McPherson is the top kicker in the 2021 Draft [Highlights+Scouting Report]

High School

Florida Kicker Evan McPherson Declared early for the 2021 NFL Draft – And In today’s video we are taking a look at what makes him so special as well as how well he projects to the NFL.

Big shoutout to @Butter for coming on the channel you can check out his latest video here:

Script/Sources:
Coming into 2020, Evan Mcpherson was crushing the ball. 89.5% on field goals as a freshman, 89.5% as a Sophomore. His field goal target line was for a 62 yard field goal for goodness sake.

He opened 2020 by mashing too. 55 no problem, 53 with ease, 50 above the top of the uprights. 51 above the top of the uprights.

One area where McPherson is already in the upper half of pro kickers is in his leg swing efficiency. He takes an enormous push step into the ball while letting his kicking leg drift into position – then he waits for his plant foot to hit the ground before initiating his swing. This allows for there to be no wasted movement as he swings up and through the ball toward his target. His elite leg speed doesn’t hurt either.

To get a second opinion I brought in former All-American Placekicker and fellow kicking youtuber Butter:
0:00-0:37 (Link in top comment/Description)

But if you take a look at his 2020 spray chart, we also see some misses that lead to his junior field goal percentage being just 77.3%.

That 58 yard miss (zoom into dot) is pretty clean cut – he just hit too low on the ball (loses distance). We can tell because the ball rotated just a bit faster than normal. Not a pattern so not a concern. I would have liked him to make the 51 yard game tying kick vs. LSU, but it’s literally the only ball I have ever seen him pull left so my concern level is low (+ the fog, more of a credit to cade york)

If there is an area of concern it would be this cluster of weak pushes to the right. The limits of TV scouting hurt us here, but he might be dropping his right shoulder… causing his hips to come through the ball a bit late. Would really appreciate it if anybody who has a guess as to what is happening to let me know in the comments.

(Mention quarantine)

So where does that leave us?
His 89.5% accuracy his freshman and sophomore seasons are very impressive, but scouting just based on field goal percentage is almost always a mistake. It’s how last episode’s subject Roberto Aguayo got drafted in the second round while Justin Tucker went undrafted (episode card)

Scouting NFL kickers successfully revolves in part around identifying superior talent, which Mcpherson surely possesses. The unofficial mark of an NFL kicker in college (*In terms of leg strength*) is putting a 50+ yard field goal in the top half of the uprights… which he does easily at times.

Mentally evaluating him is even tougher, but Mcpherson possesses a laid back confidence that should serve him well in the NFL.

In conclusion I do have McPherson as my number one kicker in the 2021 NFL draft at the moment, with a late 5th-early 6th round grade and I am confident he will be a great addition to any NFL squad.

End Screen: One last thing – while others think kicking is lame we think it’s dope – and to prove that we goal to hit 100k by the super bowl (*weekly videos*)… so if you want to join us on that journey… thanks for watching
