Despite going down 7-0 early, No. 3 Ohio State ultimately took care of business against Rutgers at home Saturday in a 49-10 win. Star quarterback C.J. Stroud did not put up his usual numbers with just 154 yards and two touchdowns with one interceptions as the Scarlet Knights’ game plan to neutralize Ohio State’s passing game worked to some extent. But the Buckeyes ran for 261 yards even without TreVeyon Henderson as Miyan Williams dominated. One of the game’s biggest storylines came in garbage time, when Ohio State punter Jesse Mirco took off on a fake punt and absorbed a late hit out of bounds by Aron Cruickshank.
After the game, Greg Schiano addressed the controversial fake punt as well as what happened during a shouting match between himself and Ryan Day in the immediate aftermath of the play. Below is a transcript of his comments, lightly edited for clarity and brevity.
Schiano: “Well, appreciate everybody sticking around. I want to start by extending my thoughts and prayers to all the people in Florida who are struggling. That’s really personal to our team. It’s personal to me. Our family, we’ve got good friends down there. Nine players on our roster are from the state of Florida. So wanted to start off with that.
“Tough game. Ohio State has got a good ball club. We didn’t do enough things right to be, at the end, in the game. That was our hope, is that if we could get it to the fourth quarter and have it still be a game, we’d have a chance. So we didn’t accomplish our goal, but I’m very proud of our players. They prepared very hard. They played very hard. Just not our time yet. The word ‘yet’ is the operative word. Just not our time yet.”
“It’s not Ryan Day and I. I think it was two coaches, and we had to protect the players. My player was in a sea of Ohio State players, and it was closing fast, and I wanted to make sure of two things: No. 1, I had to stop our team from coming across the field. That’s how things get very ugly. I wanted to make sure that our player got out of there safely. We’re both very competitive guys. I’ve got the utmost respect for Ryan. We’re good friends. We’re good. There’s no problem between us.”
“No, we’re good friends. We both weren’t gonna let that get in the way. It was in the heat of the moment, competitive, and we were both protecting our players. That’s what coaches do.”
“Well, we were gonna work Noah back in. Noah is not ready to do the full gamut right now. He’s coming back from his injury, but we were gonna give him a chance to start the game. He got a little bit more, but not much. It’s going to be a slow process for him to get back into it. We’ll see how practice goes this week. Gavin obviously wasn’t dressed, so he couldn’t play tonight.”
