Tyler McLaurin is another “high-floor” three-star player the Michigan Wolverines snapped up in the 2021 class. At just 500th nationally, he’s ranked as a three-star to all services, but his skillset brings more to the table than his ranking would suggest. At 6’2 or 6’3 and 220 pounds, he brings solid size to the linebacker position. With long arms, as well, he could be an intriguing edge rush prospect depending on how much he grows in the next couple of years.
The thing that pops out to me about his skillset while watching his film is his ability in open space, especially in the pass. It’s usually rare for linebackers in high school to be comfortable working in pass coverage, but McLaurin seems to thrive on it. He has solid hips and instincts in the pass game, putting him in the right location more often than not to help disrupt plays.
Linebacker is one of those positions that I believe has the most open depth chart in the future at this point, with a lot of young talent trying to break through to the 2-deep. With a higher floor than many three-stars, I wouldn’t count McLaurin out as a contender for early playing time. Keep an eye out in 2022 to see if his name starts to pop up, especially on special teams.
