The college sports world has launched into a new era, when, for the first time in the history of the NCAA and modern-day college sports, student-athletes have became eligible to make money off their athleticism, fame, and social media popularity.
This is due in part to the Name, image, and likeness or N.I.L deals.
These NIL deals are now exploding all over the sports industry and college world. Athletes are taking full advantage of the opportunity now that it has become a wide-open field as of June 21, 2021. On this day, the Supreme Court ruled that the NCAA was engaging in what they called an “illegal restraint of trade” by forbidding college-students from negotiating in endorsement deals for their sports play.
And for many college students, this means that life-changing opportunities and financial prosperity are on the horizon. In fact, in just the first 6 months since the Supreme Court ruling, more than 125,000 athletes have signed some form of a NIL deal! This amounts to almost 25% of all college athletes in the country, not including the breakout high school students who found their way in the mix. And expect this list to get much larger in 2022 and beyond since the NIL space is still new and we are very early in the game.
But we have done a little research to identify some of the largest and most groundbreaking NIL deals for Black American college athletes. These are quite impressive numbers, to say the least, and we will continue to keep our eye on these bright, young stars.
