Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the best basketball players ever. He’s accomplished things at such a young age that are truly unreal. MVPs, a defensive player of the year, an NBA title and arguably the best individual finals series in NBA history. He’s an all time great who’s still in his prime. At the very least he’s in the discussion for best player in the world. But it wasn’t always this way. He wasn’t always this 7’0” 242lb anime character level athlete that dominated the game. He wasn’t always this level of player. And he wasn’t projected to be that kind of player when he was drafted 15th overall in 2013. His rise from a raw project player from greece, to a future star, to an all time great is one of the most unique in NBA history. But I always wondered what it would’ve looked like if Giannis was hyped up to be this prior to the NBA. What if people saw the signs of what he has become. Which is what I want to talk about in this video.
The perspective I have on Giannis Antetokounmpo is one that goes beyond numbers and accolades. His path to the NBA, development as a player, and rise to superstardom is a reminder of why the paths to the NBA and stardom aren’t always conventional or linear. And also why the draft will always be an incomplete science where only time will tell results.
