PFLUGERVILLE — Smithson Valley’s offense struggled in the 2nd half to move the ball against College Station in their 5A-I quarterfinal match. Their defense didnt let the Cougars move the ball either. The Rangers got a gift in the final minute but were unable to open the present of a walk off win and a trip to the semifinals.
Smithson Valley had 8 chances to score inside the College Station 10 in the final minute following a special teams blunder by Cougar punter Conner Young. But the Cougar defense stopped the Rangers every time including Harrison Robinson stuffing David De Hoyos at the goal line as time expired to win 26-21. De Hoyos ran right but Robinson broke free and stopped him with 1 arm as his right hand was bandaged up. The Cougars ran around the pitch while the Rangers fell on it in dispair.
“We just had a great chance to win a football game, and we didn’t,” Smithson Valley Head Coach Hill said. “That’s it.’
Last year the Cougars’ (12-2) hearts were broken in OT in the state final vs Katy Paetow. This year they broke the Rangers’ (12-2) hearts. They will advance to face Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial in the semis Saturday December 10 at the Alamodome.
It didn’t look like there would be much drama as College Station led 26-14 most of the 2nd half. 2 Ranger turnovers led to field goals, 1 in each half, but the defense held the Cougars out of the endzone in the 2nd half.
De Hoyos had a 6 yard touchdown run with under 6 minutes remaining to cut the deficit to 26-21. After a defensive stop, the Rangers moved the ball down the field under backup QB Ryland Walker, who started for injured QB Chase Senelick, but were stopped near midfield and punted inside the Cougar 5. The Rangers were able to get a stop inside the 20 to force a punt. But Young fumbled the snap, took a knee with the ball in his possession, and the Rangers were set up at the 4 with under a minute to go.
Walker was sacked at the 9 on 1st down, spiked on 2nd down with 30 seconds left. De Hoyos was stopped in the backfield on 3rd down but a facemask gave them a new set of downs with 20 seconds left.
On 1st down Walker tried to hit Isaiah Hackett in the end zone but it was broken up by A.J. Tisdell. Walker tried a screen pass to Kyler Clarke but he was stopped at the 1 in the final seconds. He was able to spike the ball to give them 1 last chance. De Hoyos ran right but right into Robinson’s arms to end the game.
2 of College Station’s 3 touchdowns were set up by 3rd down conversions. 1 was a 74 yard catch and run by Jackson Verdugo that made it 17-14 with 109 left in the 2nd quarter. After a quick 3 and out, Beau Kortan caught a 5 yard touchdown catch to make it 23-14 at half.
Smithson Valley was trying to reach the semifinals for the 1st time since 2008. They beat 2 Houston teams in the playoffs, joining 1990 Converse Judson as the only area teams ever to beat 2 Houston teams in the playoffs.
