Penn State Football 2022 | Know Your Enemy: Ohio State Buckeyes
Week 9 sees the Buckeyes from Ohio State come to Happy Valley. Beside the Covid-ridden 2020 season, it’s the first time Ohio State will not be facing a White Out crowd. The Buckeyes are expected to sport one of the most explosive offenses in the country led by QB C.J. Stroud, who had 44 TDs and only 6 INTs. In the backfield returns sophomore RB TreVeyon Henderson, who had 1200 rushing yards and 19 total TDs last season. At wide receiver, first round draft picks Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson are gone, but leading receiver Jackson Smith-Njigba is back (95). JSN had 347 yards and 3 scores against Utah in the Rose Bowl. Buckeyes do lose two offensive tackles along their offensive line, but look to reload in the interior.
On defense, HC Ryan Day searched for answers after the defense allowed over 200 yards rushing on 4 different occasions in 2021. His answer was bringing in defensive coordinator from Oklahoma State, Jim Knowles. Knowles also brings with him safety Tanner McCalister. OSU’s defensive line loses leading sacker Haskell Garrett, but brings back four defensive ends that could start for most teams. LB Tommy Eichenberg will the leader in the middle of the defense. Most impressive group in the defense is the secondary though. Corners Denzel Burke and Cameron Brown are back as well as safeties Ronnie Hickman, who led the team in tackles, and Josh Proctor, who is coming off an injury in 2021.
The schedule isn’t to daunting for Ohio State either. The Buckeyes get Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and Michigan in Columbus and only have 2 worrisome road games at Penn State and Michigan State.
As mentioned this game is most likely not going to be a White Out and could end up being a a Noon Kickoff if aired on FOX.
