Penn State Football 2022 | Know Your Enemy: Michigan Wolverines
Week 7, the Nittany Lions are coming off their BYE Week and head to Ann Arbor to face Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines. The reigning Big Ten Champions lose a bunch on defense, but could have an even better offense in 2022.
Believe it or not there is a QB competition between Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy, who has better physical traits, had some trouble taking care of the football last season while McNamara proved to be a solid field general. The QB battle was not decided in the spring mostly due to a McCarthy shoulder injury. Whoever the QB is, they will be without star running back Hassan Haskins who has left for the NFL. They do have RB Blake Corum, who did not play against the Nittany Lions last season. On the outside Michigan hopes to have a healthy WR Ronnie Bell back, who missed almost the entire 2021 campaign. They also have a bunch of receivers behind him with extensive playing time.
On defense it’s a different story. Michigan loses the best defensive end duo in the country in Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo. Both players will have excellent NFL career. They combined for 25 of Michigan’s 34 sacks. The leading sack returner is Taylor Upshaw, who had 2.5 sacks last season. LB Junior Colson is back from a 61 tackle season and will be expected to anchor the defense. They also lose 3 players in the secondary, most notably safety Daxton Hill, who went in the first round of the NFL draft. I also think losing Vincent Gray will hurt the Wolverines quite a bit. Look for cornerbacks Gemon Green and DJ Turner to carry the load.
Michigan is on the road at Indiana before playing the Nittany Lions and will stay at home after their matchup to face Michigan State (Michigan has lost the last two to the Spartans).
