NHL Standings Update 2/16/21

NHL

Today’s video looks at the NHL standings roughly a quarter of the way through the season. We break down the league by divisions, and discuss each team.
North 0:35
The North, also known as the Canadian division, is solid.
The division is led by an ultra competitive Toronto team that feels the pressure to succeed this year.
Right behind them is the upstart Canadiens, who are seemingly a year or 2 ahead of where we thought they would be.
Winnipeg sits in third right now. There is not too much to say about them, other than the fact that they probably regret trading Laine away.
Edmonton looks to have a strong season, too. Playing in this division helps a little bit, but they still look to be over their heads. Maybe it’s time to add more depth?
Calgary would just miss out on the postseason if the playoffs started today. Maybe it would be for the best?
Vancouver has not looked strong in 2021. They have a lot of wholes to fill. On the bright side, they do have a few young, talented players to build away.
Lastly, we have Ottawa. Considered a sleeper by many, Ottawa has really showed their youth and inexperience. The clock is not ticking, yet, and the seats are not warm. Maybe Matt Murray was traded away because Pittsburgh saw something in him?
East 4:42
The East has seemingly lived up to the lofty expectations many placed on it, as it has been ultra competitive.
Boston currently leads this division. This is even more impressive than it should be, seeing as Boston was without Pastrnak for the first couple of weeks. They looked ready for a Cup run.
Philadelphia played a lot of games early on in the season. Recently, they’ve missed a few. A lot of key players (Giroux, Lindblom, Voracek) are currently on the restricted list. How will this team preform when they return to the ice? Hopefully Hart rebounds.
The Islanders started off ice cold, but have really turned it around as of late. They’ve risen through the division doing what they do best: playing physical, impressive defense.
Washington is clinging to the last playoff spot in the division. Ovi is doing what he does best, and the rest of the team is playing well. They need to solve their defensive woes, and quick.
Pittsburgh looked to have one of the best goalie tandems in 2017. Then, they let Fleury leave via the expansion draft. That left Murray as the starter. They traded him to Ottawa, leaving Jarry as the starter. The results have been…inconsistent. The offense has been streaky, too.
The Rangers’ offense has really struggled. This is not good, as the offense was supposed to be the bread and butter of the team. The goalies have looked solid, though.
New Jersey has missed a lot of time this season. They are overmatched in this division. Embrace the lost season.
Buffalo has missed a lot of time this season. They are overmatched in this division. Embrace the rebuild.
Central 10:04
The Central is a very top-heavy division. With 3 clear heavyweights, what’s next?
Tampa Bay has not missed a beat. They are cruising through this division, and they seem to be on a mission to repeat as champions, since some still question the 2020 Cup. Yeah…try telling these guys that their Cup does not count.
Florida is having a great season. They have a good chance to make a run this year, but can they get past Tampa and Carolina?
Carolina missed a lot of time early on. They have produced lately, and are still waiting to see Teravainen produce. The future is bright for them.
Chicago is higher in the rankings than they should be due to scheduling problems for many other teams. Still, they have some solid pieces. DeBrincat looks like the real deal.
Columbus is an average team. They are playing around how I expected them to. On the plus side, Laine looks like a steal.
Dallas had an early season surge. Unfortunately, they have cooled off dramatically. They should rebound soon.
Nashville has some problems. They are an OK team. They’re playing around the level they were expected to.
Detroit stinks. They’re playing tough. But they stink.
West 14:20
The West is not good, to put it politely.
Vegas is one of the better teams in the league. They keep proving the haters wrong, year after year. Maybe they’ll win the Cup in their 3rd season of existence?
St. Louis has a strong team, and they’re playing well despite not having Tarasenko. They have a decent team, and look to make a run.
Arizona has played a lot of games. They’re a good team, but don’t have the skill to make a run into the playoffs. The future looks good.
Colorado has missed a few games. They will rise up a little soon.
Anaheim has played a lot of games. John Gibson has played very well, as has Max Comtois. They’re fall down a little soon.
San Jose is an older, overpaid team. They have to embrace a rebuild soon, or they will become the next Detroit Red Wings, except without the rings.
Minnesota is an average team. They are where they belong.
Los Angeles stinks. Just embrace the rebuild, please.
