Windows NT is the successor to DOS-Based Windows, and started development sometime around 1991. This was originally going to be a crossover project between Microsoft and IBM to combine Windows and OS/2, but this collaboration effort eventually collapsed after the success of Windows 3.0, and therefore Microsoft decided to develop work on the new Windows NT, while IBM continued to develop OS/2 on their own before it’s cancellation in 1996. Windows NT was originally intended for the business market only, but this would change following the release of Windows XP. The name Windows NT 3.1 was chosen for the first version of Windows NT so as to align it with the name of the consumer version of Windows, Windows 3.1, although the name Advanced Windows was considered prior to this decision. Several other names were also considered, such as NT OS/2 (when Microsoft was developing the OS with IBM) and Windows NT 1.0 (seen in some system files of early builds). Ultimately, the name Windows NT 3.1 was chosen for the previously stated fact. As such, the user interface is identical to Windows 3.1. This version shipped in 2 editions, Windows NT 3.1 and Windows NT 3.1 Advanced Server. This version of Windows is the first version to have a user account system with a logon screen which would be kept mostly the same up until Windows XP.
Most of the DOS utilities have been converted to Windows command line utilities, while ntvdm.exe is responsible for emulating 16-Bit Windows applications and DOS applications. Program Manager and File Manager throw up errors while trying to launch, while Print Manager, Task Manager, Windows Chat, and a bundle of several other applications refuse to launch outright. Some of the applications have been ported from Windows 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11, while FreeCelland Minesweeper were pulled from the Microsoft Entertainment Packs. There are 2 versions of the Registry Editor, regedit.exe and regedt32.exe. The former refuses to launch while regedt32.exe ;launches completely fine. Media Player refuses to launch in this build. Paintbrush appears to use the older Windows 3.0 color palette consisting of black and white for some reason. Windisk.exe requires administrator permissions. Interestingly, Winhlp32.exe has a version number of 3.50 which is the kernel version for Windows NT 3.5, which has not been developed at this time. Choosing to go to a help topic in any application results in the openeing of Microsoft Edge with an error about not being able to open help topics. Like it’s consumer counterpart, going to the about menu in most applications results in the winver.exe from Windows 11 being pulled. Running winver.exe from within the Windows NT directory and running the ver command from the Command Prompt results in the version number being displayed as version 6.2 Build 9200, which is the build and version numbers for Windows 8. Userinit.exe opens a File Explorer window while the applets in the Control Panel are redirected to the Windows 11 applets. Control Panel also displays 3rd party applets from Windows 11. Running the sound control panel results in a list of events that is blank. Running the cursors control panel does nothing. Running the screensaver files results in the options for the respected screensaver being opened instead of launching the actual screensaver (except for scrnsvr.scr).
