Question:
What position does Texas Tech Football need to improve most in 2023?

There five players/positions I’m watching this Spring for Texas Tech

1. OL
– Feel like we should get the easy one out of the way
– Two big additions (no bun intended) in Cole Spencer (LG) and Rusty Staats (C)
– Bring a veteran presences to the interior of the line
– Both have already played together quite a bit at WKU
– Also, know the offense well from their time with Kittley at WKU
– These guys could help “anchor” the OL in 2023

2. STAR
– Muddy Waters is gone due to running out of eligibility
– Insert CJ Baskerville from San Diego St
– He’s the projected starter at STAR
– He’s long rangy and versatile
– Can play the CF type role, but also reads the run game really well
– Isn’t afraid to go down hill and fill an A, B or C gap in the run game

3. DE/ EDGE
– It’s almost impossible to have one guy replace Tyree Wilson
– Tech has some serious options though
– Myles Coles and Steve Linton lead the way
– Both long rangy edge rushers that use their respective skillsets well
– Cole has longer arms than Tyree and uses his leverage and strength well
– Linton has serious bend and speed of the edge and has gained 20 pounds since transferring in from Syracuse
– Tech DC Tim DeRuyter knows a thing or two about getting the best out of his edge rushers

4. LB
– Losing a guy like Krishson Merriweather hurts a bit
– Josiah Pierre moves into MIKE LB spot
– Issac Smith had a big bowl game against Ole Miss and is someone to watch
– Also want to see who steps alongside Pierre.
– Names to know are Rodriguez, Kana, Mathews

5. Pass Catchers
– This is broad term I know, but I want to see some WRs and TEs
– For WRs, who has the best spring on the outside opposite of Jerald Bradley? Inside with Price and McCray seemed wrapped up and those guys will lineup a bit outside too
– For the TE’s, I want to see Baylor Cupp. One of the highest ranked TE’s ever coming out of HS had a solid 1st year in Lubbock after transferring in from A&M. Would like to see him used more up the seam and used in the passing game more with the OL looking improved

Did I miss any players/position groups you’re watching this spring and heading into 2023?

With Offensive Coordinator Zach Kittley and Defensive Coordinator Tim DeRuyter, the team appears to be in good hands. McGuire and his team plan to use the spring practice to not only work on building a stronger team, but also to identify which players, both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, are best suited for the upcoming season. Here are five players/positions you should keep an eye on during Texas Tech’s spring camp:

The Offensive line. It is no secret that the Red Raiders have struggled in recent years to keep their quarterback upright and the offensive line in tact. McGuire and Kittley have made it clear that improving the O-line is a priority and the spring will provide ample opportunity for the unit to gel together. With an abundance of talent across the line, it will be interesting to see which players step up and become the team’s go-to lineman this season. Look for Cole Spencer and Rusty Staats to lead this group.

The STAR position. This is a hybrid player that is part linebacker and part defensive back. It is a versatile role that will be key in the Red Raiders defensive scheme. The spring is the ideal time to identify which players are suited to fill this role and become playmakers on defense. Transfer CJ Baskerville will be the projected starter and could have a major impact.

Linebackers. The Red Raiders are also looking to bolster their linebacker corp. Expect to see competition among the players in this unit and depth chart likely shifting throughout the spring. Although, MIKE LB looks to be locked up by Josiah Pierre as he shifts inward from OLB.

Edge Rushers. Texas Tech is hoping to develop a formidable pass-rush this season after losing Tyree Wilson to the NFL Draft. The Red Raiders have a plethora of talent on the defensive side of the ball and it will be exciting to see who can make an impact from the edge. Names to monitor are Myles Coles and Syracuse transfer, Steve Linton

Pass Catchers. Texas Tech has some talented WRs and TEs and both will look to step up and earn bigger roles in 2023. Names to watch are TE Baylor Cupp and at WR Loci Founiji
