The 38-year-old Bates, a Heflin native and former Alabama team captain, will be co-defensive coordinator with the Sooners. He had been on the Clemson staff since 2017, coaching defensive tackles, serving as recruiting coordinator and recently being elevated to assistant head coach. Bates played defensive end at Alabama from 2001-04, being chosen as one of the Crimson Tide’s permanent team captains as a senior. After a two-year NFL career with the Tennessee Titans, he coached at several high schools and later on the small college and junior college level. Bates spent three seasons as defensive line coach at Jacksonville State before joining the Clemson staff in 2017. He was part of the Tigers’ 2018 national championship team, and took on the role of recruiting coordinator in 2020 . Venables, Clemson’s defensive coordinator from 2012-21, was hired as Oklahoma’s head coach on Dec. 5. In addition to Bates, Venables has also hired defensive coordinator Ted Roof, defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis and chief of staff Thad Turnipseed off the Tigers’ staff, though Roof and Chavis served in off-field roles at Clemson. Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott also departed last month to become head coach at Virginia.
