Emma Raducanu says she feels “reborn” as the 2021 US Open champion prepares for her return to the court after an eight month injury layoff at this week’s ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand.

During her time away from tennis, Raducanu underwent three surgeries, on her right ankle and both wrists, and dropped to No.298 in the world.

Her last on-court appearance was a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart last April, but the 21-year-old British star said on Sunday she is fit and ready to return with a new perspective on her career.

She received a wild card into the 32-player draw and will face a qualifier in the first round, with the winner of the first-round match between No.2-seeded Elina Svitolina and former No.1 Caroline Wozniacki up next.

The trip to New Zealand to begin her long-awaited return did have one drawback, as Raducanu missed being on the ground for Christmas Day.

But she gave a shoutout to British Airways for coming through with a merry in-flight holiday meal.

“It was so good,” she told reporters.
