How can a young rider make the jump from US high school racing to a professional career as a cyclist? Alexey Vermeulen worked his way up from winning junior road nationals to a spot on a WorldTour team in Europe, and then forged his way as a privateer in the burgeoning American gravel scene.

But many of the pathways Alexey and others of his generation used as stepping stones to a pro career as a rider are gone in the US.
