TODAY’S HIGHLIGHTS:
An ongoing land dispute resulted in a man being burnt to death at his Cunupia home, earlier today.
• The victim was identified as 77-year-old Ramdeo Ragoo, who was a visually impaired, stroke victim of Regina drive, off Bridal Road in Cunupia.
• Around 11:00am, two men of African descent emerged from a Nissan AD wagon, entered the victim’s home, and announced a robbery.
• Upon leaving with the stolen items, the suspects’ fire bombed the house and Ramdeo was later discovered burnt to death on the couch.
• The incident stemmed from an ongoing land dispute since 2018.
• The suspects allegedly attempted to burn down the house on Monday, but relatives were able to extinguish it.
Two (2) men were shot and killed at Moraldo Trace in Santa Cruz on Thursday 23rd February, 2023.
• The deceased men were identified as 31-year-old Jason Hood of LP8 Moraldo Trace, Santa Cruz; and 34-year-old Anderson Phillip.
• Around 7:10pm, the deceased were liming at Hood’s home, when several loud explosions were heard.
• Upon investigation, both men were discovered on the ground, outside the house nursing gunshot injuries about their bodies.
• They were taken to the Mt. Hope Hospital where they were declared dead.
This is the fourth double murder that occurred within one (1) week and the 15th for the year thus far.
One man was killed, and two others injured, one of them being an SRP, during an alleged shootout with police officers along the Naparima Mayaro Road at Cleghorn Village, Princes Town on Friday 24th February, 2023.
• According to Senior Superintendent Richard Smith, officers received information that several men were planning to stage an armed robbery at a liquor mart in the area earlier today.
• Police officers were strategically placed in unmarked police vehicles near the business place and an attempt was made to intercept the vehicle and this is when things got ugly.
• One man was killed, two others injured and a Special Reserve police officer who is assigned to a Unit within the Port of Spain Division and lives within the Western Division was taken into custody by police.
This was the second police-involved killing for the week thus far.
On Wednesday 22nd February, 2023: A man identified as Ricardo Martin aka “max” was shot and killed by officers of the north eastern division task force in Vegas, Morvant.
A police officer who was charged with the murder of PC Clarence Gilkes in April 2022, has been granted $600,000 bail.
• Pc Kristian Genty, who was charged with Pc Gilkes murder in August 2022, was granted bail with a surety or a cash value of $150,000 by Justice Gillian Scotland on Thursday 23rd February, 2023.
• Genty was also ordered to surrender his passport; report to the West End police station on Saturdays; remain at the address in Diego Martin he gave the court or notify the court if that changes; and have no contact with any of the witnesses in the case.
