In a gritty showdown at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, lightweight hopeful Floyd Schofield faced a barrage of challenges from his opponent, Esteuri Suero. Despite grappling with a nasty cut from a head clash and enduring a series of fouls from Suero’s dirty tactics, Schofield’s resilience prevailed.
The bout reached its climax at 2:07 of the fifth round when referee Raul Caiz Jr. intervened, disqualifying Suero for his persistent infractions. Throughout the match, Suero’s unsportsmanlike conduct, including lifting Schofield’s leg in a clinch and a blatant low blow in the final round, drew the ire of both Schofield and the referee.
Reflecting on the match, Schofield, 21, expressed surprise at the extent of Suero’s dirty tactics, which included attempting to lift him and employing rough clinching maneuvers. Despite the challenges, Schofield’s determination never wavered, even as he battled a cut above his right eyebrow, a consequence of his aggressive lunges.
Schofield’s corner effectively managed the cut, allowing him to maintain control of the fight with his aggressive approach, notably his leaping left hook which repeatedly found its mark. Despite Suero’s attempts to stifle Schofield’s momentum with clinches, Schofield’s dominance was evident, repeatedly hurting his opponent and promising a stoppage prior to the bout.
The disqualification of Suero, though disputed by him, was widely accepted by spectators as a necessary decision by the referee. As Suero stormed out of the ring in protest, he stood alone in questioning the validity of Caiz’s call.

Best night of pro career and why: An associate set up a call for Schofield with boxing royalty ahead of his professional debut.
“I got a phone call from Floyd Mayweather Jr. before the fight – it was Facetime,” Schofield told The Ring. “He wished me the best of luck and that he was going to be watching, and that right there meant everything. That was my first ever conversation with Mayweather.”
And that proved to be just the shot in the arm Schofield needed to knock out Richard Esquibel in the first round of their fight at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida on October 9, 2020.
