Accra was founded by the Ga people in the late 1600s. The word Accra comes from the word Nkran meaning ants. This is because of the many anthills seen in the countryside around Accra. Accra was a very important place for trade with the Portuguese. The Portuguese built a fort in the town like many other countries during the 17th century. They include the Netherlands, Sweden, France, Denmark and the United Kingdom.
The location that is Accra today grew into a large town around the original Ga town. As the city grew, the Danish, British and Dutch forts and the small communities that formed around the forts were added to the city.

In 1877, Accra replaced Cape Coast as the capital of the British Gold Coast colony. After a railroad was built between Accra and the inland locations of mines and farms, Accra became the economic center of Ghana. Large areas of the city were destroyed by earthquakes in 1862 and 1939, but the city rebuilt around a seaport and later a brewery. Each time it was rebuilt, the city was made larger.

The Accra Riots in 1948 fuelled the fight for independence in Ghana leading to Ghana’s independence from the UK. Ghana became a country in 1957 with its capital being Accra.

The Pokuase Interchange is a 4 level stack interchange situated at Pokuase Junction, in Accra Ghana. It is the largest interchange in West Africa. The Pokuase Interchange was initially planned as a three-tier interchange under the John Dramani Mahama administration. The project comprised the construction of a five-kilometer Awoshie-Pokuase road, a three-tier interchange at Pokuase ACP Junction, a two-kilometer Accra-Nsawam Highway, a two-kilometer Kwabenya road and a 10-kilometer local road.

Construction of the interchange was scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2017, that is, between January and March. It was to be completed after 36 months. However, construction did not start until July 2018, more than a year after the Akufo-Addo administration had taken over. The interchange was commissioned for use on July 9th,2021 by president Nana Akufo Addo.

It lies on the Nsawam Road and connects the Nsawam Road to the George Walker Bush Highway. This mega project was funded by the Africa Development Bank and the Government of Ghana and is a part of the Accra Urban Transport Projects. The objective of the project is to promote sustainable economic growth, enhanced inclusive urban development, reduced poverty as well as promote affordable transport services.
