Everyone is wringing their hands over college football realignment.
The NCAA is divided into 10 leagues, and each conference is involved in a competition for television rights with ESPN, NBC, Fox, and other TV networks.
When Texas and Oklahoma declared they will be switching from the Big 12 to the SEC in July 2021, the first domino of realignment fell.
People became aware of the SEC’s transformation into a super conference as a result of this.
And they would need to create the super conference to rival the SEC if they wanted to compete with these TV deals and top recruits.
When USC and UCLA announced they would switch from PAC 12 to the Big Ten, the next piece of the domino fell.
This implies that these Californian universities will be pitted against universities from the Midwest, including Wisconsin and Michigan.
Why? Because, according to the Sports Business Journal, the Big Ten hopes to reach a new media rights agreement for 2023 and wants prestigious programs like USC and UCLA to increase their chances of collecting over a billion dollars in TV deals per season.
But why are the fans mad?
Because their beloved teams will be compelled to move if the top teams in their league leave for better opportunities.
This means that the classic rivalries will be split up. West Coast teams could be put on East Coast schedules and the sport as a whole will become way too top-heavy.
Only the schools in these super conferences would be able to recruit high-end talent.
