The College Football Playoff (CFP) is currently in negotiations regarding a revenue-sharing arrangement among participating conferences, a crucial step toward finalizing a new media rights contract with ESPN. While deliberations on the postseason system’s format starting from 2026 are temporarily suspended.
According to three anonymous sources familiar with the matter, conference officials have been engaging in discussions with their respective institutions this week. They’re considering a six-year commitment extension to the College Football Playoff. However, these discussions are confidential, and the parties involved prefer to remain unnamed.
The CFP, set to expand from four teams to 12 this year, has tentatively agreed to a new six-year contract with ESPN worth $1.3 billion annually. This agreement also entails restructuring the final two years of the current contract (2024 and 2025) to accommodate additional playoff games.
Post-2025, there’s a void in contractual obligations binding the ten major college football conferences and participating schools to the playoff system.
The objective, according to the sources, is to have all conferences signed onto the extended participation agreement by the end of the week, including finalizing the revenue distribution terms.
Initial reports by Yahoo Sports! indicate that the proposed plan favors the Big Ten and Southeastern conferences, guaranteeing them over half of the playoff’s annual distributed revenue. The Atlantic Coast Conference and Big 12 would share about 30%, while the remaining Bowl Subdivision conferences would divide the rest, with Notre Dame also receiving an annual guarantee.
The existing CFP contract allocates approximately $79 million annually to the Power Five conferences, including the now reduced Power Four due to changes in the Pac-12. Both the Big Ten and SEC are seeking larger shares of the revenue, while easing off on their previous demands for increased playoff team access.
Proposals to expand the playoff further in 2026, such as to 14 teams, with specific automatic bid allocations for certain conferences, have been mentioned. However, detailed talks on the format are currently on hold, as they won’t directly impact the ongoing media rights negotiations with ESPN.
