In 2019, Arcadia University announced it would create men’s and women’s ice hockey programs. The private Division 3 college, located outside of Philadelphia, did not realize at the time that it would make history with a key leadership choice. BNC’s Anthony Amey gives more information on Kelsey Koelzer and her career. Growing up, Koelzer was often the only girl playing in a sport dominated by boys. She also learned tough lessons as a Black woman in a sport starving for diversity. She is the NCAA’s first Black hockey coach. Koelzer joined “Start Your Day” with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss her accomplishments. “It obviously impacts how I go about my day-to-day,” she said, citing that she tries to be herself and leave a lasting impact while representing her gender and race.
