Charlie Nelson of Huntsville opened it in January. Nelson, 25, graduated from the University of Alabama in 2018, studying finance and economics, before opening a vintage clothing store in Huntsville back in June 2020. He said he would often go thrifting to find his own unique style, searching for cool items to wear before noticing a huge demand for it during college.“I started selling some of that stuff I found through the years because I found out so many people wanted it,” he said. “It started taking off from there.”He began selling Alabama vintage apparel online and created a few popup shops on campus, which did well, giving him the idea to open the store in Tuscaloosa, selling mostly Crimson Tide-themed items like T-shirts, sweatshirts, snapback hats, bomber jackets and other memorabilia. He said the vintage sweatshirts and snapbacks are his top sellers. But you’ll also find Bear Bryant Coke bottles, Sugar Bowl hats, Iron Bowl T-Shirts, national title lowball glasses, a 1986 Alabama football trivia board game, classic souvenir cups, commemorative license plates, rare bobbleheads and much more.“You can’t really find this stuff anywhere else in Alabama,” Nelson said. He said vintage apparel remains popular because “it’s sustainable fashion,” lasting much longer than newer, fast fashion clothing. “You can’t find this stuff anywhere. It’s just so cool,” he said. “You walk out, and you’re the only one wearing it. Here, you’re building your own unique style.”The winning tradition certainly helps. He said the 1992 national championship era especially inspired commemorative items people yearn to re-live through what they wear. He said people there for that and other past titles tell him all the time they used to have the clothes they see in his store.“It just creates demand because all those fans who were there want that shirt that they had in ’92 that they probably threw away and didn’t think anything of it,” he said. “I love talking with them about it. There’s an atmosphere in Tuscaloosa, whether it’s the athletes or fans or locals, that no other college can really compete with.”Since opening in January, Nelson said business is good, thanks in large part to UA students constantly seeking out vintage clothing, including Crimson Tide athletes, many of whom regularly shop there and even post their purchases in their Instagram stories, tagging Alabama Vintage. But the love has spread throughout the greater Tuscaloosa area.“The students have been loving it.
