THIS Can RUIN NCAA Recruiting… | NIL and NCAA Football

NCAA F

After hearing Hunter Dickinson’s comments on NIL, The Squad react to colleges like Tennessee taking advantage of the current NIL rules to nab five-star recruits, like current high-schooler Nico Iamaleava.

Let us know in the comments how you feel about the pending NIL problem within the NCAA. Should the NCAA or the individual conferences, like the SEC or the Big Ten do something about this?

Brad Crawford, of 24/7 Sports, writes:

Tennessee football received a recent verbal commitment from five-star 2023 quarterback Nicholaus Iamaleava that immediately sparked conversation about the role name, image and likeness plays in recruiting college football’s top-rated prospects. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, who has voiced his opinion several times on NIL changing the landscape of college football, says the idea of collectives paying student-athletes will alter the way those players are viewed when they step on campus.

“You’re going to have all these locker room dynamics, you’ve got a player coming into school over there in East Tennessee for $8 million who hasn’t played a down,” Kiffin said this past week on The Rich Eisen Show. “You’ve got a locker room saying, wait, what if the guy doesn’t play, how’s that going to work? How’s the donor going to feel that paid all that money when the guy’s not playing. You’ve got a lot of things that haven’t been figured out at all.”

Iamaleava — the No. 4 quarterback in the 2023 class and No. 6 player nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite — is Tennessee’s first five-star quarterback commit since the 2002 class and the highest-ranked Volunteers commit overall since 2015.

“They had everything I was looking for,” Iamaleava told 247Sports. “I met some incredible people, not just with the football program but everyone we met was so welcoming to us and made me feel like home.”

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney’s recent remarks on NIL and the need for college football to be “blown up” put the lack of checks and balances under the microscope. Swinney already sounded off on college football’s uncertain future in the NIL era, and this time mentioned frustrating “bureaucracy” associated with NIL and nothing being handled “in a real-time manner” relating to rules and guidelines.

“I read that — I actually texted him, ‘Good job,’ on it because it is,” Kiffin said. “I’m for the kids making money. It’s just there’s no — I said it from Day 1. No salary cap in the NFL — how does that work? And different teams have different money, and there’s no real contracts off it because they’re not necessarily locked in. So technically, everybody could be a free agent every year. And really — think about how messed up the system is.

“If you’re a great player — you’re Bryce Young after the national championship last year. You should go in the portal — even if you wanted to stay at Alabama, ’cause all you’ll do is drive up your price there, because then the collectives, they’ll suddenly come with a lot of money, Alabama people to keep you. So what would any player do — to opt into a free agency every year? They would do it, test the market, and get the most you could.”

Kiffin was the first major coach to challenge current NIL stipulations last season.
