2020 was a wild season for Mississippi State. The Bulldogs opened up with an upset win at LSU behind 623 passing yards from KJ Costello. They then fell at home to Arkansas and suffered a blowout loss to Kentucky before narrowly losing to Georgia and Ole Miss. They concluded the year with a blowout win over Missouri and a bowl win vs Tulsa to finish 4-7 in Mike Leach’s first year in Starkville. Leach is planning on things to be a little bit better and more consistent in 2021. He finally has his QB in Will Rogers who performed extremely well when Costello played poorly and was injured. Southern Miss transfer Jack Abraham will challenge for the starting job, though. The Bulldogs return eight starters total on offense and should see major improvement in Leach’s air raid offense. The defense also returns eight starters from a unit that was surprisingly solid under DC Zach Arnett. The main area of emphasis is stopping the pass as Arnett’s rushing defense ranked in the top 50 nationally. With plenty of depth and talent at all three levels, the Bulldogs defense should rank in the top half nationally which could be good enough to get them to yet another bowl game. With a favorable non conference schedule and a big home slate that features games against LSU, Alabama, Kentucky, and Ole Miss, Mike Leach should have this team in the postseason and maybe then some by season’s end.
