Monta Vista High School (Cupertino, CA) had been the #1 ranked team in the in the CCS the entire season. They had won the De Anza Athletic League championship and had defeated Woodside High School in Round 1 by a score of 28-7 and St Francis High School in Round 2 by a score of 16-6. The Matadors featured QB Rusty McDonald, RB’s Gary Trapp and Chris Johansen, and lineman Mark Duggan.
The defining play of the game was Mountain View’s Scott Hamilton picking up a Monta Vista fumble on the final play of the 3rd quarter and taking it 57 yards for a touchdown.
