Trey Lance (born May 9, 2000) is an American football quarterback who played college football at North Dakota State. As a redshirt freshman in 2019, Lance won the Walter Payton Award and Jerry Rice Award and was named the most valuable player of the 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game. He also set an NCAA record for most passes thrown in a season without an interception, doing so with 287 in 2019.
Lance was born in Marshall, Minnesota. He was trained mainly by his father Carlton, a former cornerback at Southwest Minnesota State University who briefly played in the Canadian Football League and World League. After retiring from play, the elder Lance returned to Marshall, home to both his college team and his wife Angie, whom he had met at Southwest. Lance “stood out” in a town with little racial diversity, with Carlton being black and Angie being white.
The younger Lance had played running back in youth football, and only became a quarterback in middle school. Before his eighth-grade season, his father asked his teammates who could best throw a football; all pointed at one Jake Hess, who went on to become Trey’s closest high school friend. When Carlton asked if anyone else wanted to play the position, none were interested, and he then made Trey the backup. Lance attended Marshall High School, where he was viewed as the best quarterback prospect in the state. He initially wanted to play at Minnesota and had been ready to commit there after attending a recruiting event in February 2017. However, he decided against it after their coaches wanted him to play safety instead of quarterback.
Lance was not considered a quarterback prospect by Power Five programs; most that had an interest in him wanted him as either a wide receiver or defensive back. He received at most two Power Five offers; one source said that his only such offer was from Rutgers, while another said that his only such offer was to play linebacker at Iowa. He did receive offers to play quarterback from several Group of Five FBS programs including Air Force, Boise State, Northern Illinois, and Western Michigan. In December 2017, he committed to play college football at North Dakota State.
Starting all 16 games as a redshirt freshman in 2019, Lance won the Walter Payton and Jerry Rice Awards and was named the most outstanding player of the 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game after throwing 287 times for 28 touchdowns and no interceptions, an NCAA record for most passing attempts in a season without an interception. He also ran for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Bison’s 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Lance only participating in a single exhibition game against Central Arkansas that October when he threw for two touchdowns and ran for an additional two while throwing the only interception of his college career. The Bison were scheduled to make up the rest of the season in early 2021, but Lance announced following the game that he would opt-out and begin to prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft.
